Adventure 1: World Peace

Before we get going, please read the ‘About World Peace Adventure‘ link at the top of the page. Is it sort-of clear what I’m trying to do here? Good, let’s get started. So, what’s World Peace? Or, at least, how is it currently defined? Well, according to Wikipedia (which, for all its faults, is generally a good starting place for most things) World Peace is “an ideal of freedom, peace and happiness among and within all nations and people; an idea of planetary non-violence by which nations willingly cooperate – either voluntarily or by virtue of a system of governance that prevents warfare”. We also learn that, since the conclusion of World War 2 in 1945, the United Nations has “worked to resolve conflicts without declarations of war”. All well and good in theory, but the reality is that there have been numerous violent wars and conflicts across the world since 1945, so something’s clearly failing in this world we live in. Why?

Various theories have been put forward over the years to suggest how World Peace could be achieved. Let’s take a quick look at some of those theories:

World Peace through dominant political-economic ideologies: Marxism assumed that a world revolution of the proletariat – the working class – would lead to World Peace. Well, the rise and fall of Marxism/ Socialism/ Communism in many ways dominated the 20th Century, and World Peace certainly didn’t emerge from it. Democratic Peace Theory has it that when all nations are democracies they simply won’t wage war on each other – nice in theory, doesn’t happen in reality. Similarly, Capitalism Peace Theory holds that if all countries operated under a capitalist economic system we’d all just get along. The ‘Cobdenism’ theory of world peace is related here, 19th Century economist Richard Cobden believing universal free trade would make wars impossible because no nation could be truly self-sufficient for a sustained period of time. Again, the principle’s admirable but when you start stirring profit-hungry 21st Century multinational companies into the mix, more questions than answers emerge. Multinationals would concur war’s not good for business, of course, but it’s no stretch to believe a multinational motivation for profit would trump one for political stability or individuals’ freedom and happiness. It just doesn’t seem prudent to put all our eggs in the trade basket and hope for the best.

World Peace through Mutual Assured Destruction: Popular during the Cold War, M.A.D. is the military notion that with enough nuclear weapons to destroy all life on the planet, starting any war would be crazy, therefore no one would do it, therefore we should all be armed to the teeth. More on this later in the blog (Let’s say I’m not an advocate…)

World Peace through the United Nations Charter: Essentially, since World War 2, this is what we have now and seems our best chance at achieving world peace in the current climate. The U.N. Charter was designed to embed fundamental human rights, respect international law and unite the strength of independent countries to maintain international peace and security. Sounds good, huh? So why’s it not working?

World Peace through Globalisation: The word ‘globalisation’ means many different things to many different people, but at its heart given the trend of city-states to unify into nation-states and then of nation-states to unify into larger institutions (for example, the European Union and African Union), a unified, globalised ‘world order’ is surely all but inevitable, right? So should we just be patient and assume it’ll all work out for the best, or are there pit-falls and dangers of a global village that we need to address now before it’s too late?

World Peace through isolation and non-intervention: In many ways the opposite of globalisation, essentially a world where all nations peacefully co-exist by minding their own business and focusing entirely on their own domestic affairs.

World Peace through ‘self-organised peace’: An emerging idea with no real set agenda, this is more just a consequence of behaviours that could influence local and wider society and limit the institutionalised power that can lead to violence, for example through use of social media. This approach has been described as ‘back-casting’ and is open to anyone to participate in regardless of culture, religion, politics or age.

World Peace through religion: It’s easy to blame religion for the world’s ills but despite many, many human conflicts over the years being based around or caused by religion, the vast majority of religions actually express a strong desire for World Peace. The Dharmic religions, for example, (Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism) press the avoidance of violence as a central concept. Buddhism holds that world peace will be achieved when we each achieve peace within our own minds. Hinduism looks past the illusion of earthly division to see that we are all one family. Jainism teaches compassion for all life, human and non-human (requiring vegetarianism), while Sikhism stresses sharing and working for the good of the community. The Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) share central scriptural tenets around World Peace: Christianity espouses peace via embracing the word and love of God – though many Christians believe world peace will not actually occur until a time of the ‘new world’ foretold within scripture. Islam likewise believes world peace will eventually come – but not until all humanity recognises their oneness in concordance with Islamic belief. Judaism, from which both Christianity and Islam grew, contains the belief that a messiah (saviour) will rise to unite chosen people followed by everlasting peace and prosperity. The Baha’i Faith, a more recent ‘unifying’ religion, has more pragmatically discussed the need for a world-embracing collective security arrangement. I’ll come back to religion later in the blog; I have a feeling it may rather dominate the World Peace discussion later on…

So lots of different people at least seem to want World Peace but want to achieve it through a variety of different means. If we all want the same end, though, surely it shouldn’t be beyond us? A final nugget gleaned from the initial research – from an economic point of view, in 2011 it was estimated – based on that year’s Global Peace Index – that had the world been 25% more peaceful in the past year, the global economy would have benefited by £2-trillion, covering the 2% of global GDP required to mitigate global warming, achieved all the Millennium Development Goals, canceled all public debt at that time held by Greece, Iceland and Portugal, and covered all rebuilding costs after the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami combined. So. That’s worth a thought.

As I mentioned, it feels too early in the blog to dive straight into something like Nuclear War or Religion. There’s time for those yet and they’ll be doozies. In the meantime…
